Planning a trip to Kyoto

How the spots group

Most of these spots are in the city of Kyoto, in a few close groups. Within about 1.3 km of Kiyomizu-dera in a straight line lie Kōdai-ji, Yasaka Shrine, Chion-in, Gion District and Chishaku-in; Sanjūsangen-dō is 1.4 km away. The Philosopher’s Path runs between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji. Ryōan-ji, Kitano Tenmangū and Ninna-ji are all within 1.7 km of Kinkaku-ji; Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is 1 km from Tenryū-ji; Fushimi Inari Taisha is 1.1 km from Tōfuku-ji. Further out: Byodo-in Temple in Uji, and Amanohashidate with Kono Shrine in Miyazu, about 85 km from Fushimi Inari.

Where to start

Three of the routes we have checked start at JR Kyoto Station and continue by city bus: to Kiyomizu-dera, to the north end of the Philosopher’s Path, and to Ryōan-ji. The other pages name the nearest station: Inari on the Nara Line for Fushimi Inari Taisha, Keihan Main Line stations for Gion District and Sanjūsangen-dō, the Tōzai subway line for Nijo Castle and Nanzen-ji, the Kitano Line for Ninna-ji and Kitano Tenmangū, and Uji on the Keihan Uji Line for Byodo-in Temple. Amanohashidate's nearest is Amanohashidate on the Miyatoyo Line.

Seasons and closures

What the spot pages say about the calendar: Ninna-ji is known for its Omuro cherry blossoms in spring, and the Philosopher’s Path follows a cherry-tree-lined canal. At Kurama & Kibune, inns serve meals in summer on platforms over the Kibune River, and the valley is known for autumn colours. Some hours change with the season: Sanjūsangen-dō closes earlier in winter, Ryōan-ji keeps winter hours, and the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle also closes on Tuesdays in January, July, August and December.
