Our guide

Byōdō-in, the “Temple of Equality”, is a Buddhist temple in the city of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, built in the late Heian period. It belongs jointly to the Jōdo (Pure Land) and Tendai schools.

The visit has three parts, each with its own ticket or rule. The garden and the Hōshōkan Museum are covered by the main ticket. Going inside the Phoenix Hall costs a little extra, and it works differently: visitors go in 50 at a time, every 20 minutes, with tickets handed out from 9:10 on a first-come basis. If seeing the inside matters to you, arrive early. Uji Station on the Keihan Uji Line is about 600 m away in a straight line.
