Sanzen-in is the main attraction of Ōhara, a rural town about an hour north of central Kyoto. It is a Tendai monzeki temple — one of only a few whose head priests used to come from the imperial family — and traces its founding to the monk Saichō, who introduced Tendai Buddhism to Japan. Its Heian-period triad of Amida Nyorai with two attendants is a National Treasure.
The approach from the Ōhara bus stop is lined with shops and restaurants for temple visitors, and there are several smaller temples nearby. Inside the front gate, visitors pass through a series of connected temple buildings; the grounds are large, with gardens and walking paths.
We have not checked the bus route from central Kyoto, so look for local information before you go.
