What this place is
Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka-jinja), once called Gion Shrine (祇園神社, Gion-jinja), is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. Situated at the east end of Shijō-dōri (Fourth Avenue), the shrine includes several buildings, including gates, a main hall and a stage. The Yasaka shrine is dedicated to Susanoo in the tradition of the Gion faith as its chief kami, with his consort Kushinadahime on the east, and eight offspring deities (mikogami, collectively known as yahashira no mikogami) on the west. The yahashira no mikogami include Yashimajinumi no kami, Itakeru no kami, Ōyatsuhime no kami, Tsumatsuhime no kami, Ōtoshi no kami, Ukanomitama no kami, Ōyatsuhiko no kami, and Suseribime no mikoto.

- Purify your hands and mouth at the temizuya, then offer a coin, bow twice, clap twice, bow once.
- Draw an omikuji fortune slip and tie it on the rack if the prediction is unlucky.
- Collect a goshuin — a hand-brushed seal and calligraphy — in a dedicated stamp book.
- Buy an omamori charm chosen for travel safety, study, love or health.

Good to know before you go
- Walk to the side of the central path; the middle is traditionally left for the deity.
- Photography is usually fine outdoors but often prohibited inside the main hall.
- Grounds are typically open from dawn to dusk even when the office closes at 16:30–17:00.
