Planning a trip to Kagoshima

How the spots group

In the city of Kagoshima, Shiroyama Observatory is 0.5 km from Kagoshima Castle in a straight line, the Kagoshima Aquarium is 1 km from the castle, and Sengan-en is 2.6 km from the aquarium; Sakurajima is reached by ferry from Kagoshima Port. In Minamikyūshū, the Chiran Samurai District is 1.1 km from Chiran Castle and 1.8 km from the Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots. In Ibusuki, the Ibusuki Sand Bath is 1.2 km from the Ibusuki Hashimuregawa Site, Hirasaki Shrine is 1.4 km from Tōsenkyō, and Mt. Kaimon is in the city too. Kirishima Jingu is in Kirishima. The islands lie far out: Yakushima, and Amami Ōshima, about 380 km from Sakurajima.

Where to start

The checked routes go by sea and air: the Sakurajima Ferry crosses from Kagoshima Port to Sakurajima; direct flights reach Amami Airport for Amami Ōshima from Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka; and the village ferry sails from Kagoshima Port (Minami-futō) to Iōjima. Other pages name the nearest station or stop: Sengan-en on the Nippō Main Line for Sengan-en, Sakurajimasanbashi-dōri on the Kagoshima tram for the Kagoshima Aquarium, Shiyakushomae for Kagoshima Castle, and Ibusuki on the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line for the Ibusuki Sand Bath.

Seasons and closures

The Sakurajima Ferry no longer runs round the clock: since October 2025 it runs from early morning to late evening, so older guides are out of date. As of November 2025 Sakurajima was still active, dropping ash on its surroundings. Festivals: Hirasaki Shrine from 14 to 16 October, and Kagoshima Shrine on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
