Our guide

In the final months of the Second World War, the airbase at Chiran, in Minamikyūshū on the Satsuma Peninsula of Kagoshima, was the departure point for hundreds of Special Attack — kamikaze — sorties. The Chiran Peace Museum for Kamikaze Pilots, dedicated to the pilots, now marks the site.

Chiran Castle is about 1 km away and Chiran Samurai District about 1.8 km. We have not checked opening hours, fees or a public-transport route, so look for local information before you go.
