Our guide
Shiroyama is a hill in central Kagoshima, part of the National Historic Site of Kagoshima Castle and a Natural Monument. In 1877 the Battle of Shiroyama, the last battle of the Satsuma Rebellion, was fought around it and ended with the defeat of Saigō Takamori and his samurai.
Shiroyama Park opened in 1906. A nature trail, with entrances beside Terukuni Shrine and at Iwasakidani, passes more than 600 species of subtropical plants, such as camphor trees and ferns. The observation deck, about 107 m up, looks over Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima and is a popular place for the night view; on clear days the Kirishima mountains and Mount Kaimon can be seen too.
Kagoshima Castle is about 500 m away in a straight line, and Asahi-dōri tram stop about 800 m.
