Our guide
Kokubu Castle, also called Maizuru Castle, in the city of Kirishima, Kagoshima, was more a fortified residence than a castle. It was built in 1604 for the Shimazu clan, and Shimazu Yoshihisa lived here in retirement until his death in 1611. Kokubu Elementary School now stands on the site, but stone walls, moats and gates remain.
Kokubu Station on the Nippō Main Line is about 1 km away in a straight line. Kagoshima Shrine is about 3.7 km away and Uenohara site about 4 km. Because a school uses the site, keep to public areas.
