Our guide
Ueno Zoo, run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is Japan's oldest zoo, opened on 20 March 1882, and covers 14.3 hectares of Ueno Park in Taitō City. The Ueno Zoo Monorail, the first monorail in Japan, once linked its eastern and western parts; it was suspended in 2019 because of its age and its permanent closure was announced on 27 December 2023.
It is served by Ueno, Keisei Ueno and Nezu stations; Nezu is about 500 m from the point this page is mapped to. The museums of Ueno — Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art and National Museum of Nature and Science — are each about 500 m away. Our source says it closes on Mondays (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday); we have not checked hours or fees.
