Our guide
Ueno Park was set up in 1873 on land that had belonged to the temple of Kan'ei-ji, one of Japan's first public parks, created on the Western model in the early Meiji years. It is home to several major museums, it is celebrated in spring for its cherry blossoms, and with more than ten million visitors a year it is Japan's most popular city park.
The park is open from 5:00 to 23:00, while the museums and the zoo inside keep their own hours. It could hardly be easier to reach: Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote and other lines is about 2 minutes on foot, and Keisei-Ueno about 1 minute.
Museums are close together here: National Museum of Western Art and Ueno Zoo are about 0.6 km away, National Museum of Nature and Science 0.7 km and Tokyo National Museum 0.9 km. Akihabara is about 1.6 km off.
