Shinjuku Gyoen is a large national garden spread across Shinjuku and Shibuya. It began as an Edo-period residence of the Naitō family, became an imperial garden under the Imperial Household Agency, and is now run by the Ministry of the Environment.
Check the day before you go: the garden is normally closed on Mondays (open on Mondays in the late-March to late-April spring period and in early November), and it closes earlier in winter than in summer. There are several gates; the Shinjuku Gate is about 10 minutes' walk from the south exit of Shinjuku Station, or about 5 minutes from Shinjuku-sanchōme or Shinjuku-gyoemmae.
Meiji Jingu is about 1.4 km away in a straight line, and Takeshita Street about 1.6 km.

Shinjuku Gyo-en (新宿御苑, literally 'Shinjuku Imperial Garden') or Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a large public garden in Shinjuku and Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.
