Shibuya Crossing is not a building or a monument; the sight is the crossing itself. It has been called the world's busiest pedestrian crossing, with as many as 3,000 people stepping out together on a single green light, every direction at once. It opened in 1973, and film and television have made it one of the images people think of first when they think of Tokyo.
The best way to see it is to watch a change or two of the lights, then walk across with everyone else. It sits right by Shibuya Station, which is served by JR lines, the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, the Keiō Inokashira Line and the Tōkyū Tōyoko Line, so it fits into almost any day in Tokyo.
Takeshita Street (about 1.4 km in a straight line) and Meiji Jingu (about 1.9 km) are close enough to make one walk of it.
