Our guide

Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine in Shibuya dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shōken. Note that the emperor's grave is not here, but at Fushimi-momoyama, south of Kyoto.

The shrine keeps the sun's hours. It opens at sunrise and closes at sunset, so the times move through the year — from as early as 5:00 in the summer months to after 6:00 in winter, and closing as early as 16:00 in December. Check the month before planning an early start or a late visit. Sangūbashi Station is about 600 m away in a straight line.

It sits next to some of Tokyo's busiest areas: Takeshita Street is about 0.7 km away, Shinjuku Gyoen about 1.4 km, and Shibuya Crossing about 1.9 km.
