Our guide

Kirishima Jingū, in Kirishima, is bound up with the myth of the descent of the gods from heaven: Takachiho-gawara, the place where that descent is said to have happened, is within the shrine's grounds, and historically the whole of Mount Kirishima counted as shrine land. It is dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto and several other gods of the same myth cycle. Volcanic eruptions have destroyed the shrine several times, and several of its present buildings, among them the main sanctuary and the worship hall, are Important Cultural Properties.

We have not checked a public-transport route or opening arrangements, so plan the journey on the map and look for local information before you go. Several of the same gods are venerated at Udo Shrine, on the Miyazaki coast.
