Akihabara is the area around Akihabara Station in Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, and its nickname, Akihabara Electric Town, tells you what made it famous: shortly after the Second World War it became a major market for household electronics, and for the post-war black market too. The name itself is older and has nothing to do with gadgets. It is short for Akibagahara, after Akiba, the fire-controlling deity of a shrine built after a fire destroyed the area in 1869.
The station is right in the middle of it, so there is no journey to plan once you are on the train. From here the museums of Ueno are close: Ueno Park is about 1.6 km away in a straight line, and Imperial Palace East Gardens about 1.9 km. Senso-ji Temple is about 2.8 km off.

What this place is
Akihabara (秋葉原) is a neighborhood in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, Japan, generally considered to be the area surrounding Akihabara Station (nicknamed Akihabara Electric Town). This area is part of the Sotokanda (外神田) and Kanda-Sakumachō districts of Chiyoda. There is an administrative district called Akihabara (part of Taitō ward), located north of Akihabara Electric Town surrounding Akihabara Neribei Park. The name Akihabara is a shortening of Akibagahara (秋葉ヶ原), which comes from Akiba (秋葉), named after a fire-controlling deity of a firefighting shrine built after the area was destroyed by a fire in 1869. Akihabara gained the nickname Akihabara Electric Town (秋葉原電気街, Akihabara Denki Gai) shortly after World War II for being a major shopping center for household electronic goods and the post-war black market.
