Our guide

Osaka Castle is one of Japan's best-known landmarks, and a place where Japanese history turned: it played a major role in the unification of the country in the sixteenth century, the Azuchi–Momoyama period. The Main Tower is the part people come to climb; it is open from morning until early evening.

The castle sits a few kilometres from the city's busiest areas, which makes it an easy half-day to combine. A good pattern is the castle in the daytime and the city in the evening: Dotonbori and Kuromon Market are both about 3 km away in a straight line, and Shitenno-ji, one of the city's great temples, is under 4 km south. Osaka-jō Hall stands just 0.4 km from the tower. The nearest station, Osaka Business Park, is about 650 m away.
