Our guide

Mount Kōya is not a single sight but a large settlement of temples in Wakayama Prefecture, south of Osaka. Strictly speaking, “Kōya-san” is the mountain name of Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of the Kōyasan school of Shingon Buddhism, and the name has come to stand for the whole community around it.

This page is for the Okunoin area. Kongōbu-ji and Kongō Sanmai-in each have a page of their own, both about 2.2 km west of Okunoin. The nearest station, Kōyasan on the Nankai Cable Line, is about 2.7 km away in a straight line, so plan the last stretch. We have not checked the bus connections.
