Our guide

Kōfuku-ji was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples of Nara, and it is still the national headquarters of the East Asian Yogācāra school of Buddhism. It is part of the World Heritage Site of Ancient Nara.

Plan your money before you go: the temple takes cash only, and the Central Golden Hall, the Eastern Golden Hall and the National Treasure Museum each charge separately. A ticket for all three is cheaper than paying for each, but it is sold only until 16:00, earlier than the halls close. Kintetsu Nara Station is about 350 m away in a straight line, which makes this the natural first stop from the station.

From here Nara opens out: Naramachi Merchant District and Isuien Garden are about 0.6 km away, Todai-ji Great Buddha 1 km and Kasuga Taisha 1.6 km.
