Our guide
Cape Kamui is on the western side of the Shakotan Peninsula, Hokkaido, and its lighthouse, the Cape Kamui Lighthouse, looks out over the Sea of Japan. On 2 August 1940 an earthquake off the cape caused a tsunami that killed ten people.
Getting here takes planning. Our checked record says to take the Hokkaido Chūō Bus Shakotan Line from Otaru to Bikuni and change to Shakotan Town's Shako Bus towards Kamui, which runs from 1 April to 30 November 2026; only a few trips a day reach the cape, and some run only if booked by phone the day before. The times are in “Plan your visit” below. Shakotan Peninsula is mapped about 700 m away.
