Our guide
The Otaru Canal no longer carries freight, but it is one of the pieces of the Japan Heritage story “Otaru, the town once called the heart of Hokkaido”. Completed in 1923, it was made by reclaiming land offshore — the only canal in Japan built this way, which is why it curves gently — and it is 1,140 m long. In 1986 part of it was filled in for a road and a promenade lined with 63 gas lamps; the stone warehouses along the water survive and are lit up from dusk.
Our checked record says the JR Rapid Airport train from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo stops at Otaru-Chikkō, Minami-Otaru and Otaru; journey times and the reserved-seat charge are in “Plan your visit” below.
