Where to start

No route here has been checked yet; the pages name the nearest station where there is one: Tōbu Nikkō on the Tōbu Nikkō Line for Rinno-ji Temple and the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō, Kinugawa-Onsen on the Tōbu Kinugawa Line for Kinugawa Onsen, Tōbu-Utsunomiya for Utsunomiya Gyoza, Utsunomiya Castle and Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine, Ashikaga Flower Park on the Ryōmō Line for Ashikaga Flower Park, Mashiko for Mashiko Pottery Town, and Imaichi on the Nikkō Line for the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō.

Seasons and closures

Nikko Toshogu closes earlier in winter than in summer, so an afternoon arrival between November and March leaves little time. In autumn, traffic on the road up to Chūzenji can slow to a crawl as people come for the leaves at Kegon Falls, whose lift opens an hour later in winter. Utsunomiya Futarayama Shrine holds its main festival on 21 October. Hunter Mountain Shiobara is a snow resort whose season we have not checked.
