Planning a trip to Aomori

How the spots group

In Hirosaki, Hirosaki Castle is 0.9 km from Hirosaki Tōshō-gū in a straight line. In the city of Aomori, the Sannai-Maruyama Site is 0.6 km from the Aomori Museum of Art, and Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse stands near Aomori Station; Sukayu Onsen is 2.5 km from the Hakkōda Mountains. Lake Towada and the Oirase Gorge are on one bus line, which stops along the gorge on its way to the lake. Cape Tappi is in Sotogahama, and Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe, about 93 km from Hirosaki Castle.

Where to start

The checked route to Lake Towada and the Oirase Gorge is the JR bus that runs without a change from Aomori, Shin-Aomori and Hachinohe stations to Yasumiya on the lakeshore, stopping along the gorge on the way. Other pages name the nearest station: Chūō-Hirosaki on the Ōwani Line for Hirosaki Castle, Shin-Aomori on the Tōhoku Shinkansen for the Sannai-Maruyama Site, Aomori for Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse, Asamushi-Onsen for Asamushi Onsen, and Same on the Hachinohe Line for Kabushima Shrine. Sukayu Onsen's page says no public-transport route has been checked.

Seasons and closures

During the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival the paid areas of Hirosaki Castle stay open late, and from 24 November to 31 March they are free to enter. The bus to Lake Towada and the Oirase Gorge has been suspended in winter, so check the timetable for your season. The Sannai-Maruyama Site stays open longer in Golden Week and from June to September. Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse shows floats from the summer Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, and Iwakiyama Shrine holds its Oyama-sankei procession around the autumn equinox.
