Our guide

Hirosaki Castle was built in 1611 as the seat of the Tsugaru clan, the lords of the Hirosaki Domain, and it stands in what is now the centre of Hirosaki. It is a hirayama-style castle, and it was also known as Takaoka Castle.

When you go makes a real difference. During the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival the paid areas of the castle, the Honmaru and Kita-no-kuruwa, stay open until 21:00. From 24 November to 31 March those same areas are free to enter. The rest of the year they close at 17:00, and a combined ticket adds the botanical garden and the Fujita Memorial Garden. Chūō-Hirosaki Station is about 1.2 km away in a straight line.

Hirosaki Tōshō-gū is about 0.9 km from the castle.
