Our guide
Tōjinbō is a line of sea cliffs on the Sea of Japan, in Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, made of columnar joints of pyroxene andesite. The cliffs average about 30 m high and run for about a kilometre. They have been protected since 1935 as a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, lie within the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and have walking trails, sightseeing boats, an observation tower and a shopping arcade.
The one trap in planning: no bus runs from Fukui Station to Tōjinbō. Take the train to the Mikuni or Awara area first, then a Keifuku Tōjinbō-line bus — from stop 1 at Mikuni Station, or from stop 2 at Awara-Onsen or Awara-Yunomachi Station.
