Our guide

Takayama Old Town is the preserved heart of Takayama in the Hida region of Gifu, a castle and merchant town since the Edo period, when it came under the shogunate's direct rule. The Sanmachi streets — parts of Kami-Sannomachi, Kami-Ninomachi and the blocks around them — were chosen in 1979 as a nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and the townscape has earned Takayama the name “Little Kyoto of Hida”.

If you can, be there in the morning: morning markets are held along the Miyagawa river and in front of Takayama Jin'ya, the old government office. Takayama Station is about 600 m away in a straight line, so the old town is an easy walk. Hida Folk Village is about 2.1 km off.
