Our guide
Shimoda, near the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, was one of the two ports opened to American ships by the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854. Perry Road, a lane of old houses beside a small canal, leads to Ryōsen-ji, the temple where the supplementary Shimoda Treaty was signed the same year; the road won Shizuoka Prefecture's top urban-landscape award in 1994. Around the town, beaches line the coast.
Izukyū Shimoda Station is only about 100 m away in a straight line, so the town is easy to explore on foot from the train.
