Our guide

The Akita Museum of Art is built around the Masakichi Hirano collection. The first prefectural museum opened on 5 May 1967; the present building opened on 28 September 2013. Its main exhibit is works by Tsuguharu Foujita from the collection of the Masakichi Hirano Art Foundation, and two further galleries hold changing exhibitions.

The triangular building was designed by Tadao Ando: visitors are met by a free-standing staircase and a triangular skylight, and glass panels on the second floor, where the shop and café are, look out over Senshu Park, about 600 m away. Akita Station is about 750 m off. We have not checked opening hours or fees.
