Our guide
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa was designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA and opened in 2004. It drew 1.57 million visitors in its first year, and even in 2020, when the pandemic cut visits by 63 percent, it was the tenth most visited art museum in the world.
It sits in the middle of Kanazawa's sights: Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle and Seisonkaku are all about 0.4 km away in a straight line, and Nagamachi Samurai District about 0.8 km. Nomachi Station is about 1.5 km off. We have not checked opening hours or exhibition fees, so check the museum's own site before you go.
