Our guide
Nikkō Tōshō-gū is the centrepiece of the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō, the UNESCO World Heritage Site it forms together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinnō-ji. Forty-two of the shrine's structures are included in that listing; five of them are National Treasures and three more are Important Cultural Properties, so this is a place for looking closely at buildings.
The shrine closes earlier in winter than in summer, and entry stops 30 minutes before closing, so an afternoon arrival between November and March leaves little time. Some areas may be closed for ceremonies or repairs. We have not checked a public-transport route to the shrine, so plan the journey on the map.
The rest of the World Heritage group is right beside it: Rinno-ji Temple and Shrines and Temples of Nikkō are both about 0.5 km away in a straight line, and Tamozawa Imperial Villa about 0.9 km.
