Our guide
Unzen Onsen is a volcanic hot-spring field in the Unzen Mountains of Nagasaki. The springs were known for a long time, and in the 1910s the area was developed into a hot-spring town because of how many there were. In 1934 it became part of Japan's first national park.
The springs are surrounded by the “Hells” (jigoku): barren fields full of steam vents, bubbling mud pits and fumaroles. After the Shimabara Rebellion the Hells were used to execute Christians. Today paved paths lead visitors through them. In an older, now dormant field, paths lead to Manmyō-ji. The museum of the 1990s eruptions, when 12,000 people were evacuated and more than 40 died, is the Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall in Shimabara, at the foot of the mountains, not here.
Mount Unzen is about 4.2 km away. We have not checked a public-transport route or individual inns.
