Our guide
Uchiko is a town in the hills of southern Ehime that grew rich in the Edo and Meiji periods on wood wax and washi paper. The wealth left its mark along the Yōkaichi road, where rows of white-walled merchant houses from that time survive. In 1982 the Yōkaichi-Gokoku streetscape was selected as a nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
