Our guide
The Tottori Sand Dunes, just outside the centre of Tottori, are the largest sand dunes in Japan: about 14 km long and less than 2.4 km wide. They are part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark.
From the north exit of JR Tottori Station, buses reach Sakyū Kaikan, the stop nearest the dunes, or Sakyū Higashiguchi in about 22 minutes, and on weekends and holidays the Loop Kirin-jishi bus runs too. For the chairlift, get off at Sakyū Center Tenbōdai. There is no direct bus from Tottori Airport, so go to Tottori Station first.
Sand Museum is about 0.8 km away in a straight line, and Tottori Castle Ruins about 3.7 km.
