Our guide

The Taiji Whale Museum stands in Kujirahama Park in Taiji, a small town on the Kumano coast of Wakayama that grew prosperous through coastal whaling. It opened in 1969 to record the town's whaling history and methods, and displays whale skeletons and more than a thousand items on whales and whaling, including records of the disaster of 1878 in which many Taiji whalers were lost at sea.

Taiji is a long way from the big cities, so plan the journey. The JR limited express Kuroshio runs from Shin-Osaka to Taiji Station in about 3 hours 50 minutes; from Nagoya, the limited express Nanki reaches Kii-Katsuura in about 3 hours 30 minutes, and Taiji is about 7 minutes beyond. From Taiji Station, the town loop bus reaches Kujirakan-mae in about 10 minutes.
