Our guide
Stand in Sekigahara and the reason for the battle is all around you: the town sits in the gap between the Ibuki Mountains to the north and the Suzuka Mountains to the south, on the natural road between the Kinki region and eastern Japan. That is why an ancient checkpoint, the Fuwa Barrier, stood here, why the Nakasendō highway later passed through, and why two wars were decided on this ground — the Jinshin War and the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where Tokugawa Ieyasu's army defeated the Toyotomi loyalists.
The Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, opened by the prefecture in October 2020, is the place to get the lay of the land before walking it. American visitors may be interested to know the town has a “sister battlefield” agreement with Gettysburg (2016), and another with Waterloo (2017). Sekigahara Station is about 450 m away in a straight line.

What this place is
Sekigahara, a town at the western tip of Gifu Prefecture on the border with Shiga, lies between the Ibuki Mountains to the north and the Suzuka Mountains to the south. It has been a key route between the Kinki region and eastern Japan since ancient times, when the Fuwa Barrier, one of three great checkpoints, stood here, and in the Edo period it was on the Nakasendō. It is known as the battlefield of the Jinshin War and of the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where Tokugawa Ieyasu's army defeated the forces loyal to the Toyotomi. The Gifu Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum, run by Gifu Prefecture, opened in October 2020, and the town has signed "sister battlefield" agreements with Gettysburg (2016) and Waterloo (2017).
