Sawara, in the city of Katori, Chiba (the old Shimōsa Province), keeps a historic townscape in its centre. It prospered as a merchant town and has long been called the “Little Edo of northern Bōsō” and the “town of waterways”. In 1996 it became the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the Kantō region, and in 2018 it was recognised as Japan Heritage together with Sakura, Narita and Chōshi.
