Our guide
Bandai Bridge carries central Niigata's main street over the Shinano River in Chūō Ward, linking the Bandai side, towards Niigata Station, with Furumachi. The first bridge here, the first ever built across the Shinano in Niigata, opened in 1886. The present one, the third, was completed in June 1929: a reinforced-concrete bridge of six arches faced with granite, 306.9 m long and 22 m wide.
A rare surviving example of a large concrete arch bridge from the early Shōwa era, it is a symbol of Niigata and an Important Cultural Property. Around 10,000 people on foot or bicycle cross it each day, more than any other ordinary-road bridge over the Shinano in the city.
Niigata Station is about 1.1 km away in a straight line, and Hakusan Park about 1.3 km.
