Our guide
Nagoya Castle was built by the Owari Domain in 1612, early in the Edo period, on the site of an earlier Oda clan castle. It was the heart of one of Japan's most important castle towns, on the Minoji road that linked two of the great Edo highways, the Tōkaidō and the Nakasendō, and the modern city of Nagoya grew around it. It was partly destroyed in the bombing of 1945, and reconstruction and repair have been going on since 1957.
Plan your time around one detail: entry to the Hommaru Palace closes at 16:00, earlier than the grounds, and it is about a 10-minute walk from the main or east gate. The simplest way there is the Meijō subway line to Nagoya Castle Station, Exit 7, then about 5 minutes on foot.
Nearby are Nagoya TV Tower (about 1.7 km in a straight line), Oasis 21 (1.9 km) and Osu Shopping District (3 km).
