Our guide

Murakami, in the far north of Niigata Prefecture, grew as the castle town of the Murakami Domain, and the lanes of its samurai and merchant quarters still show it; restored machiya townhouses along the old streets won a national townscape award in 2008. The town is known for three things to eat and drink — salmon from the Miomote River, Murakami beef, and tea, as the northernmost tea-growing area in Japan — and Senami Onsen and the Sasagawa Nagare coast are close by.

Murakami Station is about 1.5 km away in a straight line, and Murakami Castle is about 0.6 km from the point this page is mapped to.
