Mount Rausu is a stratovolcano on the Shiretoko Peninsula, on the border of the towns of Shari and Rausu, Hokkaido. It is the north-easternmost Holocene volcano in Hokkaido and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. It is thought to have erupted three times in the past 2,200 years, including a Plinian eruption about 1,400 years ago and a pyroclastic flow about 500 years ago. The climbing season officially opens with a festival every year on 3 July.
