Our guide
Lake Ashi is a crater lake in Hakone, along the southwestern wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a volcano that last erupted in 1170 at Ōwakudani. It is known for its views of Mount Fuji, and around it are hot springs, historic sites and traditional ryokan; the old Tōkaidō road, the main route between Kyoto and Tokyo, ran past it.
This page is about seeing it from the water. Pleasure boats and ferries run on the lake, several of them styled after sailing warships. Many visitors stay overnight in hotels or ryokan nearby. We have not checked boat times, fares or a route to the lake, so check the operators' information before you go.
