Kumamoto Castle is counted among Japan's three premier castles, with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle, and it was built big and strong. The keep you see is a concrete reconstruction from 1960, but a number of the original wooden buildings still stand around it, and thirteen structures in the complex are Important Cultural Properties — so look beyond the tower.
In July and August the castle stays open until evening, but note that the Ninomaru ticket office stops selling at 16:00 all year, and the castle closes in bad weather. The tram stop Kumamoto Castle / City Hall is about 350 m away in a straight line.
The Kamitōri and Shimotōri Arcades, half a kilometre away, are an easy walk afterwards, and the garden at Suizenji Jojuen is about 3 km off.

What this place is
Kumamoto Castle (熊本城, Kumamoto-jō) is a hilltop Japanese castle located in Chūō-ku, Kumamoto, in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was a large and well-fortified castle. The castle keep (天守閣, tenshukaku) is a concrete reconstruction built in 1960, but a number of ancillary wooden buildings remain of the original castle. Kumamoto Castle is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle. Thirteen structures in the castle complex are designated Important Cultural Property.
