Our guide

Koiwai Farm, spread across Shizukuishi and Takizawa in Iwate, is the largest farm in Japan at about 3,000 hectares. It was founded in 1891, and its name joins the first characters of its three founders' surnames — Ono Gishin, Iwasaki Yanosuke and Inoue Masaru. Many of its historic buildings are Important Cultural Properties. Forty hectares at the heart of the farm are open to the public as the Makiba-en farm park.

The season we have checked for Makiba-en runs from 1 April to mid-November, and hours may change with the weather. Dogs are admitted, with their own ticket. We have not checked a public-transport route, so plan the journey on the map.
