Our guide
Hamada Gokoku Shrine stands on the site of Hamada Castle, also called Kameyama Castle, in the city of Hamada, Shimane. It enshrines about 23,000 people from the former Iwami Province who died in Japan's wars after the Meiji Restoration. Memorial services were held in Hamada twice a year from 1906; the shrine was founded as Hamada Shōkonsha in 1938 and took its present name in 1939. After the Second World War it was called Kameyama Shrine, after its hill, and returned to its name when Japan regained sovereignty. In the grounds are a statue of the bugler Kiguchi Kohei and a monument to the writer Shimamura Hōgetsu.
Hamada Station on the San'in Main Line is about 1.3 km away in a straight line.
