Our guide
Fujiwara-kyō was the capital of Japan for sixteen years, from 694 to 710. It stood in Yamato Province, in what is now Kashihara, Nara, having moved from nearby Asuka, and remained the capital until the move to Heijō-kyō, today's Nara. It was the first planned city in Japanese history laid out on a square grid, modelled on Chang'an, the capital of Tang China.
Miminashi Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line is about 1.4 km away in a straight line, and Kashihara Shrine about 2.5 km. We have not checked what can be seen on the site today, so look for local information before you go.
