Awaji Island is the largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, lying between Honshu and Shikoku in the eastern part of the sea, and belonging to Hyōgo Prefecture. It covers about 592 km². Its name is often said to mean “the road to Awa”, the old province across the Naruto Strait on the Shikoku side, now part of Tokushima Prefecture — a reading put forward by scholars such as Motoori Norinaga, though it is disputed.
That old idea of a road still fits: the island is the link between the two larger islands. From Kobe, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge viewpoint carries the expressway across the Akashi Strait to Awaji, and on the far side, across the Naruto Strait, lies Naruto Whirlpools. We have not checked public transport on the island, so plan your route before you go.

What this place is
Awaji Island (淡路島, Awaji-shima) is an island in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshū and Shikoku. The island has an area of 592.17 square kilometres (228.64 square miles). It is the largest island of the Seto Inland Sea. Some scholars, such as Motoori Norinaga, have claimed that the name means "the road to Awa (阿波)", the historic province bordering the Shikoku side of the Naruto Strait (now part of Tokushima Prefecture), although this etymology is disputed.
