Our guide
The Amaharashi Coast is a stretch of shore in northern Takaoka, Toyama. Its small islands and reefs, such as Oiwa and Meiwa, are seen against the Tateyama range across the bay, and that view is what makes it famous. It lies within Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park and is one of Japan's 100 best beaches. The name — “rain clearing” — comes from Yoshitsune-iwa near the station, the rock where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have waited for the rain to stop.
The view depends on the weather: our checked record says the mountains show best on clear winter days, roughly November to March, and in the afternoon, with the sun behind you. Amaharashi Station on the JR Himi Line is the way in by train; the details are in “Plan your visit” below.
