Our guide
The Metasequoia Avenue in Makino, Takashima, Shiga, lines the road up to Makino Kōgen (Prefectural Route 287) for about 2.4 km. The cone-shaped trees in rows along the straight road make a strongly symmetrical view, and because metasequoias are deciduous it changes with every season. It began in 1981, when the Makino fruit growers' cooperative planted about 500 saplings as part of a children's farm project, and a local preservation group has tended and extended it since. In 1994 it was chosen as one of the Yomiuri Shimbun's 100 new scenic avenues of Japan.
One practical point: its popularity has brought traffic jams and trouble from people parking and taking photos on the road, so do not stop on the carriageway. We have not checked a public-transport route.
