Our guide
Lake Biwa is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, and one of the oldest in the world: more than four million years old, and estimated to be the thirteenth oldest anywhere. It lies wholly within Shiga Prefecture, just northeast of Kyoto, and that closeness to the old capital is why it turns up so often in Japanese poetry and in the history of battles.
It is far too big to see all at once, so start at Otsu, at the southern end. Otsu Port, where the lake cruises leave, is about three minutes on foot from Keihan Biwako-Hamaotsu Station, and a short bus ride or 15-minute walk from JR Otsu. Getting out on the water is the easiest way to feel the size of it.
Biwako Quasi-National Park, which protects the lake and its shores, has its own page.
