Our guide

Yoshinogari is a large and complex archaeological site of the Yayoi period, in Saga Prefecture. Pottery-based chronology placed it between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD, but radiocarbon dating has since shown that its earliest Yayoi remains go back before 400 BC.

It is open every day except 31 December and the third Monday of January and the day after, until 18:00 in summer and 17:00 the rest of the year; a two-day ticket costs only a little more than a single day's. Yoshinogari-Kōen Station is about 850 m away in a straight line.

What this place is

Yoshinogari (吉野ヶ里 遺跡, Yoshinogari iseki) is a large and complex Yayoi period archaeological site located in the town of Yoshinogari and city of Kanzaki in Saga Prefecture, Kyūshū, Japan. According to the Yayoi chronology established by pottery seriations in the 20th century, Yoshinogari dates back to between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD. However, recent attempts to use absolute dating methods such as AMS radiocarbon dating have shown that the earliest Yayoi component of Yoshinogari dates back to before 400 BC.
