What this place is

Yahiko jinja (弥彦神社), also known as Iyahiko-jinja, is a Shinto shrine in the Yahiko neighborhood of the village of Yahiko, Nishikanbara District, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the three shrines which claim the title of ichinomiya of former Echigo Province. The shrine's annual festival is held on February 2. This shrine standing at the foot of a mountain is popularly and traditionally known as a power spot for love and good fortune. The shrine is located within Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park and is on the eastern base of Mount Yahiko, a 634-meter sacred mountain which forms the shintai of the shrine.

Yahiko Shrine (弥彦神社) is one of the standout places to visit in Niigata. Give yourself unhurried time for photos, seasonal views, and nearby food stops. IC cards such as Suica, Pasmo, or ICOCA cover most trains and city buses.

Good to know before you go

  • Walk to the side of the central path; the middle is traditionally left for the deity.
  • Photography is usually fine outdoors but often prohibited inside the main hall.
  • Grounds are typically open from dawn to dusk even when the office closes at 16:30–17:00.
